The town of
Bowling Green
offers a free, self-guided
walking tour of historic
homes. ColumnWood is located near the heart of town
on Main Street next door to the Bowling Green
Baptist Church, circa 1898, and just two blocks from
the
Caroline County
Courthouse, circa 1835, designed by students of
Thomas Jefferson.
A 32-square-foot
outdoor mural depicts the town’s 1864 occupation by
Union troops. The mural was painted by Artist Sidney
E. King, who has painted numerous murals for the
National Park Service. On the third Saturday each
October (during peak fall color), Bowling Green
hosts the Harvest Festival—an ideal time to visit.
ColumnWood
is central to some of the nation’s most popular
tourist attractions, and we’re always available to
make suggestions and give directions. Washington,
D.C., Richmond, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia
Beach, Jamestown and Charlottesville are all within
a 2-hour drive of Bowling Green. Paramount’s Kings
Dominion theme park is a short, 20-minute drive
away. Historic Fredericksburg and Colonial Beach are
diverse and interesting places to explore, as are
area vineyards and Civil War battlefield parks.

Caroline County has a
growing number of historic sites to visit. One of
the most famous is
Jackson Shrine, where Stonewall Jackson
died. A marker on State Route 301 between Port Royal
and Bowling Green shows the area of the Garrett
Farm, where history says Lincoln assassin John
Wilkes Booth was killed. Caroline County has five
sites associated with the popular Virginia Civil War
Trails, Lee vs. Grant tour. Two of the sites are
located within walking distance of ColumnWood; all
are within a 15-minute drive.
Old Mansion,
circa 1738, is Virginia’s oldest continuously
inhabited residence. It is located at the south end
of town, a short evening walk from ColumnWood.
All attractions are within a two hour drive of
ColumnWood B&B!
Your hosts will be happy to provide directions
to these and other area points of interest. |
