Century of History |

Members of the Broaddus family
built ColumnWood between 1910 and 1914.
Originally, the home was meant to be one large
house, but sometime in early construction the
family decided to turn the structure into a
duplex for Katherine (Broaddus) Burt and her
brother, Dr. John Broaddus. It
was the first duplex in Bowling Green and has
been referred to simply as the "Duplex" for
decades. |
With over 5,000 square feet of hardwood floors,
ColumnWood is one of Bowling Green's largest
historic homes. In addition to high ceilings and
pocket doors, it is blessed with many large
windows, which still have their original "wavy"
glass. Most of the interior doors have transom
windows overhead. Four of the six fireplaces
still bear their original tiles and coal grate
and several have decorative columns.
These columns, along with the
columns on both the front and back porches, and our
property's huge sycamores; some of which are thought to
have been planted before the Civil War inspired us to
choose the name "ColumnWood."
