"Lohr Wins Jump Event"
Susie Lohr of Sparta won the jump event at the Rolex Junior Masters Water Ski Tournament held at Callaway Gardens, Georgia Memorial Day Weekend. Lohr's jump of 123 feet in the finals out-distanced top seed Leander Currie of New Zealand by 3 feet.
The invitational Masters is a premier world-class water ski tournament where skiers from all over the world compete for top honors. Lohr placed second in the trick skiing event with a score of 5,170 points, and managed a fourth place finish in the slalom event to capture a second place finish in the overall results. Trick skiing winner Mandy Nightingale of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, a long-time competitor of Lohr's, was the overall champion. Other overall places were captured by Leander Currie (3rd), Holli Hunt of Orlando Florida (4th) and Anais Amade of France (5th).
Invitations to the Masters were restricted to U.S. National Champions and skiers in the top five positions in the World Standings. Other Virginia skiers included Eric Hall of Richmond and Russell Gay, whose hometown is Fredericksburg. Hall placed 3rd overall in the Rolex Junior Masters and Gay placed fourth in trick skiing and fifth in the wake boarding events in the Masters.
The 37th Masters was sponsored by Correct Craft Boats, Rolex, Ford Motor Company, and Ashland Chemical. Highlights of the tournament will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2 later in the summer.
