Clay Mottley I began to serve in the music ministry of Wright's Chapel in the fall of 1998. But it wasn't until 2005 that my wife, Lindsay and I officially joined the church, the day we baptized our daughter, Cameron. As Music Director I play music for both Sunday services and direct the choir at the 8:45 a.m. worship. I organize special music for each week, rehearse the choir, work with other musicians that wish to play for the congregation, and provide music for other church occasions. I'm fairly laid back, but I do care that the music the congregation hears is as much a reason to come back as any other. I strive to better the choir as well as my own abilities to make music an exciting part of the service. The attitude of the choir reflects my own, in that you try hard to sound great, but most important is to sing from the heart and have a good time doing it. I think there are a few reasons that have lead me to the type of music director I am. My six years of singing with the Maranatha Touring Choir in Fredericksburg has had the largest impact, not only in the songs I choose but in knowing what a choir can do. I've also learned from experience as a working musician playing my own songs for several years. Also, my ideas have been shaped by watching and listening to many music directors and accompanists while growing up in my father's churches (he is a Methodist minister in Virginia). Taken together it has lead me to expect more from the music at church and to make it the type of music that more people want to hear, including those who did not grow up in the church. In addition to serving Wright's Chapel, I have a beautiful family which I love, two dogs, a full-time job at the YMCA in Richmond, write songs and have recorded three CD's, and play softball with the church. |
